Direct from Ole ...
2008-03-31 The monthly news about my progress working on NL2 turned out very short for this March. The reason is that I was not able to work for the last 3 weeks because of health problems. A couple of days ago I started to work again, but right now I am able to work a couple of hours per day, only. Hopefully I will be able to report more pleasant news next month. There is not much to tell about NL2 at this point, except for that most parts of the file handling will be changed compared to NL1.x. Instead of a global folder for tracks, objects and environments, NL2 will use a project based folder architecture which means that each track is stored in a separated folder with all the resource-files required by the track (custom cartextures, scene-objects etc.) located inside. Project folders can be compressed from within the application to a single package file. Users are not required to uncompress a package file unless they want to change its content. I guess this is the most universal way to handle it without the problems NL1.x has, like file-name conflicts, requirement of additional packaging tools and file access rights issues.

I like. This will make things far more organised. Except for object textures and things like that, which means ill have a lot of copying and pasting to do! Shame he's ill though, hopefully nothing serious. |

| Ole is doing a fantastic job but I do believe he needs to get out from behind that computer and get out in the fresh air and sunshine and get some exercise and that would help his health a little. |

This news post comes with a couple of brand new screenshots focusing on the recently finished sky engine. I needed a couple of more days for cleaning everything up so that screenshots could be made. I am proud to present some great new engine features, which NoLimits2 will make use of. I have been working hard on them for the last 3 years and now I thought it is time to show some screenshots. The greatest feature in my eyes are high quality dynamic shadows (can be seen on the left most picture). The dynamic shadows are completely realtime and will be on every object, including the coaster track, the cars and so on. The quality of the shadows can easily compete with realtime shadows found in the latest games. They look better than most of the games I played so far without loosing too much extra speed. The dynamic shadows will truly come to live with the second greatest feature which is a dynamic day-night-cycle. The sun will rotate around the scene in a very real manner depending on time and earth location. The shadows will instantly adapt to the current sun's position. No more need for using skybox textures or switching between environments. Let me get into more detail about the following screenshots. The left most screenshot shows a good weather sky with some trees and auto-plant grass. The shadows of the trees are casted on the terrain and grass. In the middle screenshot, the clouds are becoming more denser. The clouds are computed in realtime and are not a fixed texture. The weather seems to change from good to rain. On the right screenshot, the weather completely turned into a rainy day. The sky is completely overcasted and rain particles are falling down. Even though the trees are not looking that great yet, the screenshots clearly show how much work was spent into a couple of great additions I have been working on. There is still a lot to do and I do not think NL2 will be ready to come out next year. I am now targetting for Spring 2010. Thanks for the patience, but things like that simply need a lot of time. It will be definetely worth waiting for. [ol]

tbh, spring 2010 isn't that bad. I obviously want NL2 now, but if its looking this good already, imagine what the finished product will be.
This really is going to be special. I'm gagging for a bit of coaster news on it though, track styles, car designs etc. I'm really wanting him to create something very realistic (contradicts the name 'No Limits' somewhat).
Cheers for the update. |

| Will it be an update patch for those who already have the full 1.7 version? |

New news, Don't get excited its exactly what we had all realistically thought.
"I was busy moving to a new place for the last weeks and had not much time for NoLimits 2. The last things I was working on were tunnels through terrain and water which worked already quite well. I guess that the move delayed my progress on NL2 by at least 2 months and there is still awefully a lot to be done. I have become really annoyed by working on this for so long and I have absolutely no idea when and if everythig will be finished. I am hoping to be more productive at my new place but the fun working on NL2 has basically reached zero. Quitting is not really an option because the project is too far already but since I am the only programmer at the moment, I am simply overcharged with work. I will keep you informed when there is more positive news. [ol]" |
